In Full Health initiative to advance equitable health innovation

The AMA is partnering with founding partner organizations to support In the Holistic Health Learning and Action Community with content, tools, resources and opportunities to connect, engage and learn with and from each other to advance equitable health innovation.

of In full health the initiative grew out of the AMA’s Organizational Strategic Plan to include racial justice and the advancement of health equity, specifically related to the strategic approach “Ensuring Equitable Structures and Opportunities in Health Innovation.” The Center for Health Equity facilitated the development of the novice In full health principles with the AMA’s External Advisory Group on Equity and Innovation.

of the initiative is built around five principles for advancing equal opportunities in health innovation, inviting community members to:

  1. Understand how structural racism, sexism, and bias affect the allocation of health innovation resources so steps can be taken to dismantle them.
  2. Evaluate the value of all health innovation solutions by their impact on health equity as a fundamental metric.
  3. Invest in health innovations designed by innovators that build by and for historically marginalized communities.
  4. Leverage health innovation investment models that support asset ownership and wealth development within historically marginalized communities.
  5. Engage industry influencers in addressing barriers and systems-level needs.

Despite decades of increased investment in health innovation, data show that the US continues to have worse health outcomes than other high-income countries and persistent disparities.

The root of the problem is that Blacks, Latinos, Indigenous peoples, people of color and women make up approximately 70% of the US population, but are underrepresented in investment, development and purchasing decisions in health solutions.

In full health provides health industry stakeholders with the opportunity to change systems of persistent inequity across the industry by prioritizing investments in health innovations developed by, with, and for Black, Latino, Indigenous, and other communities of color; women; LGBTQ+ communities; communities with disabilities; low-income communities; rural communities; and others living within and at the intersection of historically marginalized communities.

Institutional investors, fund managers, health care payers and delivery systems, health startups and other solution developers, and policy makers are invited to form a community of stakeholders committed to learning and action to focus equity in their health innovation investments and resource allocation.

The community will provide access to experts, resources and opportunities for members to share lessons learned and challenges with each other and identify opportunities for collective action and policy change. Join in In full health Now.
